For the spring of 2021 I added this extension on the south side of the hive stand. The 2 hives there contain the packages I just purchased.
In our bee class, we were looking at the effects of having our hives close to each other and we decided that the best practice is to separate our hives, or at a minimum rotate the hives so that the entrances are not all lined up in the same plane. This slight re-design allows me to get closer to the goal of putting the hives in more of a semi-circle which would help reduce drifting of bees.
I also began my migration of 10 frame equipment to 8 frame equipment. I have been using follower boards to effectively reduce the hive sizes, but getting older (and having back issues) means lifting smaller hive boxes would be an advantage I cannot ignore.
