What are the bees doing for winter?

This winter has been colder than past winters so far. What are the bees doing? They are huddling together (clustering) for warmth and to generate the heat required to keep the brood nest at 94 degrees. When it is warm enough inside the hive, they will move their storage of food (honey) closer to the cluster so they don’t have to do much more than turn around to eat.

The queen is now laying more eggs to increase the population for the anticipated nectar flow in the spring. They must have food available for this stored up from the summer/fall. I have also added a 1″ thick layer of sugar on top of the hive that they can access for additional food.
