This Swarm Catcher is designed to attach to the front of your hive and stop the queen from leaving so that the swarm will stay at your hive. When it is full of bees, simply slide the entrance closed, pull the box off the front of your hive and install the bees into a new hive just as you would install a package of bees.
Best practice is to install them into a hive at least 3 miles from your apiary or else the foraging bees will return to the original hive.
The box is made of new wood, and has sliding doors on the back operated by a sliding strip of wood. All joints are glued and nailed for durability. The front screen and queen excluder are kept in place by screws that allow you to open the box to shake the bees out. The outside of the box is painted white while the inside is uncoated where the bees have regular contact.
By catching your own swarms, you can save hundereds of dollars a year by not needing to purchase bees in packages or nucs.
